EATING OUT A guide to local restaurants and cafes Helberg Barbecue Growing Stronger The word is out and Helberg is on the top of the list for delicious, mouthwatering barbeque. Phillip and Yvette Helberg began as a food trailer on 23rd Street and now have grown to a full size restaurant located at 8532 N. State Hwy. 6, just past FM 185. They have learned that people will come when the barbeque is so good it has your taste buds wanting more. They are named the 25 best new barbecue joints in Texas by Texas Monthly magazine. The couple pride themselves in putting their heart and soul in what they do and their hard work shows by offering a unique flavorful barbeque, that’s compared to none other in the area. The most sought-after items on the menu includes their high-quality brisket, which they often smoke for 15 to 16 hours. Another major seller is the pesto stuffed turkey. Every Saturday, “monster ribs” are on the menu – they are beef and can weigh as much as 1 ½ lbs per rib. The smoked gouda cheese and macaroni is a popular side, as it their Mexican street corn salad made with creamed corn and queso fresco, cilantro and chili lime salt toppings. Desserts include Miniature pies and Mimi’s banana pudding. Customers are always calling to find out their daily specials. The specials do not last long, when they are gone, you’re out of luck. To be sure and be able to take advantage of the daily special, you can call 254-848-8200 as early as 8 a.m. and put your order in. This will ensure there will be some available for you. These specials include: Wed: Whole rack of ribs - $25; Thurs: Pork Belly Burnt Ends (aka Bacon Wings) $20/lb.; Fri: 10 oz smoked Brisket Burger (the best in the area) $11. The Helberg’s are currently working on their Private license to sell beer, but until then, come by on a Saturday and have a beer on the house with your meal. In addition to the restaurant, the Helberg’s have a private catering facility located in Crawford. If you are looking for a unique place for a get together that includes the best barbecue in the area, then this would be a great choice. The best way to know what’s going on at Helberg’s is through their social media accounts to see if their specials have changed or if they have added new items. Facebook@HelbergBarbecue; Instagram@helbergbarbecue. Of the rising popular barbecue world, Phillip said, “It’s kind of like its own cult, so competitive but so friendly. Craft barbecue is the new craft beer. It’s really big in Texas and is spreading. It’s not stopping any time soon.” 8532 N.
