Police: 1 dead, 2 hurt in North Waco shooting

A 19-year-old man was killed and a Waco man was charged with manslaughter in a North Waco shooting that injured two others Tuesday night.

Waco police said Nicosia Omar Harlan, 25, was arrested in the incident that left Michael Ray Brooks Jr., of Waco, dead and another man and woman suffering from gunshot wounds.

Police were called to the 2500 block of Lasker Avenue about 9:35 p.m. after reports of gunfire in the neighborhood. Police found Brooks dead inside a home.

Waco police Officer Garen Bynum said the wounds suffered by the other two were not life-threatening. They were treated at a local hospital for their wounds, he said.

Police found multiple shell casings from at least two guns extending from the house toward the street, Bynum said. He said Tuesday night that it was unclear how many may have been involved in the shooting incident, which he said broke out after a dispute at the home.

Bynum said officers continued their investigation throughout the night and took Harlan into custody about 4 a.m. Wednesday at the Valley Terrace Apartments, 1001 N. Valley Mills Drive.

There is no initial evidence to link Tuesday night’s shootings with several other shootings in the past three months and no indication that the incident was gang-related, Bynum said.

Harlan was arrested April 4 on charges of third-degree felony assault against a public servant, misdemeanor assault, DWI and unlawfully carrying a weapon, according to McLennan County court records.
