Baylor baseball halts skid with win over Texas State, 4-2
Tre Richardson came up with a big opening-inning extra-base hit, and the Baylor baseball team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 4-2 win over Texas State on Tuesday at Baylor Ballpark.
Richardson staked the Bears to a 2-0 first-inning lead with a two-run triple off the Bobcats’ Zeke Wood, scoring Jared McKenzie and Jack Pineda.
Texas State (11-15) came back to tie the game with a Ben McClain sac fly in the second and a Bryce Bonner RBI single in the third.
But Baylor (14-10) took the lead to stay on Antonio Valdez’s RBI single in the fifth, then added some insurance when Kyle Nevin smacked a solo home run in the seventh.
Jacob Ashkinos (3-0) picked up the win on an all-staff kind of pitching day, throwing three innings of scoreless relief. Luke Boyd tossed a scoreless ninth for his fourth save of the year.
The Bears will host North Carolina A&T in a four-game series starting Thursday, including a doubleheader on Friday.
Baylor volleyball closes out regular season at home
The No. 9 Baylor volleyball team (18-5) will close out the regular season with a pair of home matches on Wednesday and Thursday.
The Bears will host Kansas State at 2 p.m. Wednesday, then brings in Texas State on Thursday.
The Wildcats are 13-7 on the year, while the Bobcats are 29-8. These will mark the final tuneups before the NCAA tournament for the Bears.
Baylor’s Rodoni named Big 12 Pitcher of Week
Baylor sixth-year senior Gia Rodoni was named Big 12 pitcher of the week.
Rodoni went 3-0 on the road last week with two of those wins coming in the Big 12-opening series against Texas Tech in Lubbock. She threw 21 strikeouts over 18 innings, including the 600th strikeout of her career, while allowing just two walks and three earned runs.
On Sunday, Rodoni matched her career high by throwing eight innings before the Lady Bears won 5-2. Earlier in the week, Rodoni shut down Sam Houston State with a one-hitter in 5.1 innings with nine strikeouts in a 7-3 win.
Baylor soccer welcomes Longhorns for match
The Baylor soccer team will host Texas at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Betty Lou Mays Field.
The Bears (4-4-3) are coming off a 5-0 win over Louisiana last Saturday as Taylor Moon scored three goals.
The Longhorns (6-5) are coming off a 3-0 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last Friday. All spring games between Big 12 opponents will count as nonconference games after they played a conference-only schedule last fall.
Cardinals sign ex-Longhorn legend Colt McCoy
TEMPE, Ariz. — The Arizona Cardinals have signed veteran quarterback Colt McCoy to a one-year deal.
The team announced that it added the 34-year-old McCoy on Tuesday night. The 11-year veteran has played with Cleveland, San Francisco, Washington and the New York Giants. He’s played in 44 games, including 30 starts, and thrown for 6,455 yards and 30 touchdowns.
McCoy is expected to be a backup for third-year quarterback Kyler Murray, who was the No. 1 overall selection in the 2019 draft and has had two impressive seasons.
McCoy played in four games last season for the Giants, starting two. He threw for 375 yards, one touchdown and one interception and completed 60.6% of his passes.
