Urquidez not reporting to Baylor

  • 0

Copperas Cove offensive lineman J.P. Urquidez announced that he won’t report with Baylor’s 2016 recruiting class on Monday.

He’s the third major recruit in the 2016 class who isn’t planning to begin classes this week in the wake of last Thursday’s firing of coach Art Briles.

Urquidez joins Port Arthur Memorial running back Kameron Martin and Silsbee offensive lineman Patrick Hudson. Signees who don’t report this week can ask for a release from their scholarships or begin classes at Baylor in July or August.

However, Kountze defensive back Grayland Arnold said he will report Monday.

Within two days of Briles’ firing, Baylor’s 2017 recruiting class shrunk from six to two after decommitments by La Vega tight end Kedrick James, Stafford wide receiver Hezekiah Jones and two Houston Bellaire players, lineman Jayden Peevy and safety Donovan Stiner.

Meanwhile, Baylor senior quarterback Seth Russell made a statement on his Instagram account after returning from a two-week mission trip in Brazil.

Russell, who is coming back from a neck injury, expressed his support for Baylor.

“My prayers for Baylor University are that we never forget that we need God as desperately on our best days as we do on our worst,” Russell said. “We will overcome. We will become stronger.

“We are broken. We are hurting. But at the end of the day, we are His. With that gift alone, there is no reason to not overcome through these hard times.”
