Saturday roundup

Marlin 12, Clifton 6: In a rain-delayed game moved to Waco ISD Stadium, Marlin’s defense stood firm in a rugged win over the Cubs in District 10-3A Div. II play.

Clifton (4-5, 2-2) didn’t score until quarterback Tanner Thomas found the end zone with 35 seconds to play. But Marlin (4-5, 3-1) snuffed out the Cubs’ rally attempt when it recovered the ensuing onside kick.

Jarice Stricklin flashed his big-play ability for the Bulldogs’ first score, zipping 91 yards on a punt-return TD in the first quarter. Marlin held a 6-0 lead until late in the third, when the Bulldogs extended it to 12-0 on Keinan Henry’s 1-yard touchdown pass to Chris Lofton.

Though Marlin’s school district is in jeopardy beyond this year because of academic struggles, the Bulldogs have clinched the 23rd playoff trip in school history and their first since 2011.

Austin Hill Country 66, Vanguard 26: In Austin, the district-leading Knights (9-1, 4-0) put up 30 points in the fourth quarter to run away from the Vikings in TAPPS District 2-I six-man action.

Vanguard (5-4, 1-2) got 89 rushing yards and a touchdown from Thomas Alcorn, who also returned a kick 70 yards to paydirt.

Friday’s late roundup

Hutto 43, University 15: In Hutto, quarterback Tyler Herrick had a hand in four touchdowns to propel the Hippos past University and into the playoffs.

Herrick tossed two touchdown passes and also scampered for a pair of scores on runs of 21 and 4 yards. Deary’on Millegan also rushed for a pair of TDs for Hutto (6-3, 3-2 in District 17-5A).

University (0-9, 0-5) will have one final chance to break its now-25-game losing streak when it faces rival Waco High in the WISD Hall of Fame Game next week.
