Stephenville 56, La Vega 23: In Stephenville, the defending state champion and sixth-ranked Yellowjackets didn’t have any trouble with the visiting Pirates, rolling to a big win.
Stephenville (3-1) racked up nearly 300 yards rushing in the first three quarters before emptying its bench late in the game. Jarrett Stidham also punished the Pirates with his passing, as the Stephenville QB passed for three scores.
Early in the game, young La Vega (1-3) did its best to make things interesting. When Ayorinde Gibson broke loose on a 64-yard run down to the Yellowjacket 3 late in the second quarter, the Pirates were in business. Moments later, Gibson scored from three yards out to bring La Vega to within 21-16 with 3:29 lft in the half.
But Stephenville found another gear, scoring three touchdowns over the next three minutes, including a momentum-sealer when it recovered a La Vega muffed kickoff and subsequently scored with just seconds left in the half.
