Everything’s coming up roses — and herbs, vegetables, bushes, grasses, trees and much more — this spring at Westview Nursery and Landscaping.
Founded in 1954 and now under the management of third-generation owners and brothers Keith and Gregg Houck, this Waco-based company has firmly established itself as a reliable source for everything customers need for their gardens, yards and landscapes. In addition, the nursery has three of their fourth generation family members — Derrick, Colt and Will heavily involved.
According to Keith, this is the perfect time to start thinking about spring planting.
“I’d say March and April are our busiest two months of the year,” he said. “People normally use Easter weekend as a cut-off date for late freezes, meaning it’s generally safe to get your plants in the ground after that. The sooner you can get them in the better it is to build up their root systems before the heat of summer sets in, the better off they’re going to be.”
As for what to buy right now, anything and everything is fair game.
“Many people are thinking about getting their gardens going with flowers, strawberries, lots of tomatoes and peppers, and herbs like rosemary and lavender,” Keith said. “We carry everything from squash to lettuce to broccoli to cauliflower, just about any kind of vegetable you can get. It’s also a good time to plant spring bulbs, annuals, fruit trees and shrubbery.”
To help nurture all that greenery, Westview produces its very own lines of professional potting mix, hardwood mulch and fertilizer for all plants.
“We’ve created these products based on analysis of things that work better in our area than other fertilizers that are made in different regions and shipped in,” Keith explained.
Because Westview Nursery runs weekly specials and promotions on a variety of merchandise all year long, customers are always guaranteed the best deals on the products, plants and items they’re looking for whenever they want to shop. The company also prides itself on the level of customer service it’s able to provide.
“My dad and grandfather really focused on service when they first opened 70 years ago, and we carry on that tradition,” Keith said. “When you come in here, you know you’re going to be able to get answers to any questions you might have, not like going into other places where you can't even find a salesperson. We do extensive training and I've got very knowledgeable people on my staff, some who have been with me for 35 or 40 years. I’ve been doing this almost 50 years myself!”
Quality is another metric that sets Westview apart from its competition.
“We’ve got five or six big growers we've been working with and buying from for years,” Keith continued. “They know exactly what we will and won’t accept, and they don't ship us anything that’s not their best quality. We’re very competitive on price, too, and we can special order anything we don’t already have in stock.”
